Two ways to record a field
Walk the boundary
Records a point every few metres while you walk. Best for curved or irregular fields.
GPS corners
Stand at each corner and press Add corner here. Best for fields with straight sides; more accurate because you can wait for a good GPS fix at each corner.
Step by step
- Open DrawMyPlot in your phone's browser (Chrome or Safari) and allow location access.
- Go to a corner of the field. Wait until the accuracy shows 10 m or better (green).
- Press Walk the boundary and walk along the edge, or press GPS corners and add each corner.
- When you are back at the start, press Finish plot.
- Check the shape on the satellite image and drag any corner that looks wrong. Then export.
Tips for better GPS accuracy
- Turn on high-accuracy location in your phone settings, and keep the screen on while walking.
- Stand still for a few seconds at each corner before adding it.
- Accuracy is lower under trees, near tall buildings and in deep valleys. In cocoa or coffee farms with shade trees, the corner method usually works better.
- Points with poor accuracy (worse than ±20 m) are skipped automatically while walking.
- After walking, compare the shape with the satellite image and correct it there; the image is often more precise than the phone.
Does it work offline?
GPS works without mobile data, but the satellite image needs a connection to load. Open the page and zoom in on the area before you go into the field, so the image is already loaded. Your recorded plots are saved on the phone.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install an app?
No. It works in the phone's web browser. The page must be opened over https for the browser to allow GPS.
How accurate is a phone GPS?
Usually 3–10 metres in open fields, and worse under tree cover. For a 1-hectare field, a few metres of error at each corner can change the area by several percent, so check the result against the satellite image.
Can I use the result for EUDR?
Yes. Add the plot name, producer and country, then export as EUDR GeoJSON. See the EUDR plot mapping guide.
