How to measure land area on a map
- Search for the address or place, then zoom in on the satellite image.
- Press Draw boundary and click each corner of the land. Close the shape by clicking the first corner.
- Read the area in the panel. Change the unit with the Area in menu; the selected plot also shows a table in every unit.
- Drag any corner to adjust. The area updates as you move it.

Traditional units such as the bigha are not included because their size changes from one state or district to another. Measure in square metres or acres and convert using your local definition.
Uses for a field measurement
- Fencing: the perimeter tells you how much fence wire or how many posts you need.
- Seeds, fertiliser and spraying: application rates are given per hectare or per acre.
- Planting density: divide the area by the space per tree to estimate how many trees fit.
- Buying or renting land: check the size stated in an offer before visiting.
- Lawns and gardens: work out how much turf, seed or mulch to buy.
Accuracy
The calculation accounts for the curvature of the Earth, so it works from a garden to a large estate. Accuracy depends on how carefully the corners follow the real boundary and on the quality of the satellite image. For legal purposes, rely on an official survey.
